What he said made me pause

I went to a meeting last night and the speaker said something that stopped me, it stopped the chatter in my head, for more than a few minutes. It seems like frequently you go to a meeting and you hear exactly the thing you need to hear. Like I had been giving some thought to drinking and it seemed like at every meeting for a week, someone was back from a relapse or there was someone brand new, or that guy made that comment about getting sober being the hardest thing he ever did, and it snapped me out of it. Anyway, it works that way a lot where the topic seems to be eerily on point. And sometimes you may not need to hear something specific, but someone will say something that causes a shift, sometimes a major shift, in your perspective for example.

The meeting last night was so great because the speaker had kind of a new take on things. His slant was a little bit different and definitely thought provoking. I get a bit tired of hearing the same thing over and over and I always like it when someone says something that gives me a new way of looking at things, AA, the steps, life, etc. The whole lead was really outstanding, and he said a lot of things that gave me a lot to think about, but he said one thing that really made me pause and think about certain aspects of my life. He said, "you will never find security in anything that can be taken from you." I've never felt like I've had the kind of security he was talking about last night and it made me pause because - things that can be taken from you - those are the only places I've ever looked for it. And it scared me for a second too because it made me realize that what I've been searching for in terms of security - it may not exist. And if I really think about it - what are those things that can't be taken from me where I may find what he was talking about? I can only think of 1 thing and I already have it.

That's a great idea. I like that concept, because it makes absolute sense to me.

Funny, 'cause I can't think of a single thing that couldn't be taken away.
